Location, location, location! This restaurant, without doubt, has the best location in Sydney.
It is situated on the rooftop of the historic Custom House building at Circular Quay. Consequently, the harbour views are spectacular!
Cafe Sydney has been in operation now for 16 years and (after dining here twice both for lunch) I can understand it’s longevity. It’s a stellar performer ticking all the boxes. As previously mentioned, it has an amazing location and vista; casual relaxed atmosphere fashioned in contemporary stylish interior; quality service; and impeccable food all of which leaves a lasting impression. I love that they have a cocktail lounge area as you enter which sets the mood for a relaxing dining experience. You can sip on a cocktail or a champagne or a Pimms while they prepare your table. Seating sprawls to an outdoor terrace which caterers to all seasons and affords those beautiful Sydney Harbour views.
After our dining experiences at Cafe Sydney, I can confirm its busy here and caters to all walks of life. In our last visit in early February, there were large tables booked for formal functions celebrating birthdays and a christening. However, on the other end of the spectrum, there was a couple in tracksuit and sneakers pulling in from their harbour walk to refill the tank. There are private rooms available as well boosting an excellent option for a private function. I highly recommend you book in advance whatever the occasion to ensure you secure a spot.
The service is excellence! The staff are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and professionalI’m impressed with the staffs’ ability to interact with all ages – in particular our little one, Freya.
The meals were all amazing – visually appealing with excellent cooking techniques, flavours and texture. We ordered starters, mains and of course, dessert with a hit of espresso to end.
I started with Seared Scallops, skara bacon, corn puree, faro and basil sauce. The scallops were cooked perfectly – translucent inside and caramelised on the outside to give a lovely sweet taste. My hubby, Ben had two courses to start with Sydney Rock oysters with eschalot, chive & cabernet vinegar and Salad of Moreton Bay bug, prawn, pea cream, apple, radish, trout roe, chevil. Scrumptious!
Freya ordered Pesto Gnocchi with a bowl of chips which she enjoyed. We tried the gnocchi and it was delicious – plump soft pillows of potato pasta.
I had for a main, the Veal fillet, Bacon, Porcini Mushroom, Roast Garlic, Butternut Pumpkin, Oregano & Parsley. It was fantastic. The veal was cooked to perfection – pink in the middle just the way I like it and all the components of the dish worked well together. Ben ordered the Crisp Berkshire Pork Belly Loin, Morcilla Sausage, Cidar Dressing & Roast Apple. I sampled this of course and I loved the tender pork belly with crispy top crackling.
To bring our dining experience to a close, we indulged with desserts – Salted Caramel, Chocolate Peanut Tart, Banana Fritter, Chocolate ice cream and Vanilla Cheesecake, Berry, Coconut Crumble & Raspberry Sorbet. Both were devine, but if I had to choose one it would be the Vanilla Cheesecake! The fresh flavours and textures, especially from the crumble, were just the thing.
Pricing is very reasonable considering the overall experience – starters range from $25 to $29 while mains are amid $35 to $39. Desserts are $19.
All in all, Cafe Sydney is a restaurant you must add to your TO DINE list. I guarantee, you will be equally impressed and will return again and again as we have.
