To stumble upon a great cafe is like winning the lotto!
Ok maybe not the lotto (not that I’d know what that felt like anyway), but for someone who loves food (like me), it comes close.
A few weeks ago, we did just that! We were driving around Camperdown biding time before picking up a friend and we found this gem of a cafe nestled on a cul-de-sac across from the Camperdown Oval, called Gather on the Green.
True to their name, you’ll find a gathering of locals; some sitting snugly on couches or at tables within the small cafe while others are sprawled on blankets (supplied by the cafe) or sitting on the park benches across the road sipping their Mecca coffee and nibbling cafe fare.
If you are lucky and find a table inside, you’ll find a miss-match of eclectic vintage pieces – chairs from the sixties, mason jar lights, old bottles, old signs, wooden crates and expose brickwork. It all makes for a cosy, relaxed and friendly environment.
The staff is great – super attentive and accommodating (you need this when you have two kids under the age of 4).
Sustainable, local & ethically sourced food (and even the furnishings) is the ethos of this cafe. This is communicated on the first page of their menu where they state, “At
Gather we endeavour to support local & small business where possible. We believe that this helps to protect not only our environment but also our community”. They go on to name all their local supplies such as Fair Trade beans by Mecca, Artisan bread by Brassiere Breads at Botany, Eggs by Papanui Open Range Farm – where happy chickens produce healthy eggs, and more.
All the food is made onsite. You’ll find hearty fare such as baked eggs complete with homemade baked beans, feta and served with sourdough. They make their own pickles and even nut butter. Everyone is thought of here with gluten-free & vegetarian offerings available.
I tried the Corn Fritters with haloumi, spinach and tomato relish. It was delish! Next time I do want to try the French Toast Brioche with caramelised banana, bacon and maple syrup – what!
Hubby, Ben, had The Morning After Breakfast – 2 poached eggs, bacon, mushroom, sausage, spinach & avocado on sourdough bread. I took the silence at our table as a sign that he enjoyed it! Our little Freya had a bacon & egg roll which she devoured.
To add, you’ll find colouring pencils for the little people, water bowls for the hairy four-legged people and timber benches perched outside where you can enjoy the warm sun and park views while sipping great coffee.
A communal hub, affordable prices, consciously sourced food, makes this a “jackpot”. You’ll love!
